ABSTRACT

Urban expressway undertakes the important tasks of long-distance travel and traffic distribution within the city. Restricted by factors such as urban layout, land use, and road network planning, toll stations on urban expressway are often close to urban roads, and the traffic volume characteristics of toll stations are affected by the traffic operation of surrounding urban roads. Therefore, during the peak hours, the traffic volume of the urban expressway suddenly increases, and the phenomenon of vehicles queuing at toll stations takes place frequently. Taking an urban expressway toll station as an example, this research analyzes the characteristics of expressway traffic volume through field investigation, video analysis, and data analysis, to determine the hourly variation and diurnal variation rules of traffic volume at the urban expressway toll stations as well as the characteristics of traffic composition. At the same time, the change in traffic volume during holidays, weekends, and workdays is studied to analyze the traffic travel rules of urban expressway toll stations. The research results can provide guidance for scientific control and precise optimization of urban expressway traffic flow.
