ABSTRACT

Since 2017, smart expressway pilot projects have increased rapidly in China. However, independent single project construction is therefore difficult to bring large-scale benefits of the smart expressway. It is imperative to develop the information system architecture of the smart expressway from the perspective of the countrywide large-scale road network. A general framework for smart expressway is developed in this study by using the Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) method. The framework includes an application architecture as well as a business architecture. Built on the statistical analysis of more than 70 smart highway project proposals, the business architecture is designed. It composes four business domains and their sub-domains, which include highway construction, maintenance, operation, and service. The application architecture is further designed as a three-level architecture composed of top-level comprehensive applications, middle-level professional applications and bottom-level supporting applications. Core technology directions in smart expressway construction are proposed to guide the forthcoming construction of smart expressways. The general information systems architecture developed in this study is greatly significant to avoid the fragmentation of single projects of smart expressway. Meanwhile it can shed light on unified and homogeneous services for the national smart expressway network across China.
