ABSTRACT

People with dementia experience the world in a different way to other people. Familiarity with surroundings is recognised as a key to reducing symptoms and loss of function associated with the condition of dementia. It is estimated that 70–80% of people diagnosed with dementia live at home. Awareness of the issues associated with dementia should inform the design of all new dwellings and new neighbourhoods and the design of the public realm in general. The principles of design engagement can be built around group and stakeholder joint working of people living with dementia, staff and their carers. The process of designing and engaging with people living with dementia can involve a number of ways of co-production which are at the basis of design collaboration. A sand tray is an informal and friendly way of creating fun and inspirational discussions amongst people living with dementia.
