ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a comprehensive view of the physical layer of the 5G (fifth-generation) new radio (NR) system, focusing on its key aspects. It begins by providing a description of the 5G NR framework. Subsequently, it delves into specific techniques employed in 5G NR, such as beamforming, massive multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO), and channel coding, offering detailed insights into their functionalities. As there is exponential growth in mobile data demand, the 5G cellular net aims to leverage the abundant spectra available in the millimeter wave (mmWave) bands to significantly enhance connection capacity. This chapter explores the NR physical layer frame structure and NR numerology, as well as various techniques related to 5G NR including mmWave communication and air interface 5G, while also considering their respective advantages and disadvantages.
