ABSTRACT

Biosurfactants, having both hydrophilic as well as hydrophobic domains, are capable of micelle formation between two materials. This property has been exploited widely in several sectors like bioremediation, agriculture and cosmetics. Marine biosurfactants, among others, are mostly used, owing to the vast untapped marine resources of the Indian peninsula. India has a long coastline that experiences a diverse climate and has wide-ranging biodiversity. This chapter explores the diverse types of marine biosurfactants producing microbes from the different coastal regions of India and their application in different fields. The isolation, screening and use of these biosurfactants (from lab to industry), along with their future prospects and challenges are discussed.
