ABSTRACT

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the modality of choice for a wide range of conditions but is not always well tolerated by patients. The design of conventional scanners, the duration of the scan and the scanner noise may all impact upon patient experience. MRI may also present particular challenges for some children, adults with learning disabilities or neurodiversity, and people living with dementia and people with limited mobility.

A wide range of strategies are available to support patients within MRI, from fundamental communication skills through to the use of play and simulation. The evidence base for such strategies is still emerging and will be discussed. The entire patient journey can be considered as consisting of three discrete stages, namely the ‘Warm Welcome, a Positive Procedure, and a Fond Farewell’. This concept/model will be considered so that aspects of patient care such as pre-appointment information through to the way the patient is discharged after their scan are encompassed.
