ABSTRACT

This chapter will look at patient care in general radiography, which is defined as projection imaging for outpatients, inpatients and in emergencies. The focus of this chapter will be on imaging outpatients.

In this area of diagnostic radiography, the full range of patients attend for imaging examinations. The diagnostic radiographer needs to adapt their technique and communication skills to deal with patients of all ages, all abilities and disabilities and be able to carry out imaging examinations with the result of diagnostic images and patients who have been cared for.

This chapter will explore the outpatient general radiographic imaging examination from start to finish, exploring patient care from the start of the patient–practitioner relationship to the end of the examination including after-care. Patient care skills will be explored alongside examples of good practice and the research evidence.
