ABSTRACT

The diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms. An acute CRPS is characterized by major symptoms: swelling, stiffness, pain, functio laesa and rubor. Autonomic dysregulation can express itself as increased sweating, discoloration, abnormal temperature and trophic disorders such as abnormal growth of hairs and nails. Complex regional pain syndrome type I is, according to the most recent taxonomy, a disorder of unknown origin which can manifest itself as an acute problem. For the diagnosis of CRPS, no additional examination is indicated. The diagnosis is made on clinical grounds and after exclusion of other, more specific and treatment-eligible conditions. Additionally, patients experience allodynia: sensory stimulation that normally does not cause pain is now experienced as painful and can give violent reactions.
