ABSTRACT

This chapter defines the concepts involved and how portfolio management and communication, including collaboration aspects, have evolved during the last decades both from a process and an enabler standpoint including a review of some of the literature in the field. It describes the importance of communication to strategic portfolio management. Beside formal and informal lateral communication, the portfolio management ecosystem combines upward and downward communication. Since portfolio management provides key capabilities for achievement of an organization’s strategy, there may be a major focus at the executive level both to assemble and to communicate detailed information on the progress of major objectives and impacts of the components, as well as any changes to previously communicated plans. The strategic portfolio management system put in place must ensure that every project aligns with organization’s goals and objectives by standardizing project requests; quickly validate, align, and prioritize projects in portfolios; and make the right decisions on trusted data.
