ABSTRACT

E-commerce marketplaces represent one of the most recognizable forms of e-commerce. Their innovative and technologically advanced nature has led to the integration of new information and communication technologies (ICT) such as Big Data, cloud computing and machine learning, fostering sustainable development. However, the impact of ICT on sustainability in ecommerce is subject to different perspectives. Marketplaces vary in how they report on their progress towards sustainability goals. Some utilize the well-known UN Sustainable Development Goals as their core targets, while others establish their own indicators and programs to measure sustainability achievements. Consequently, a direct comparison between marketplace reports is not straightforward.

This chapter explores the utilization of emerging technologies in the pursuit of sustainable goals within the e-commerce context. It aims to establish a common ground for comparing various e-commerce marketplaces concerning their adoption of ICTs. Presented analytical procedure involves selecting a representative marketplace from each continent and assessing its technology usage. Additionally, the chapter highlights the marketplace's achievements in relation to the UN SDGs. Furthermore, it delves into new concepts adopted by marketplaces, such as re-commerce, which contribute to attaining the Sustainable Development Goals.
