ABSTRACT

Researchers have increasingly become interested in emerging Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and their applications for sustainable development (SD). This is evidenced by the huge number of publications contained in reputable databases such as Web of Science (WoS) or Scopus.

This chapter describes the study results focusing on recognizing the state of research on the emerging ICT for sustainability. More than 9,000 articles from the WoS database concerning ICT were subject to bibliometric analysis in the context of their role and applications in various sustainability areas.

The most important results of the study arising from keywords analysis showed that: a) smart cities, green IT, and environmental or ecological sustainability were definitely the most frequently studied areas of emerging ICT; b) the issues related to corporations, tourism, supply chain, agriculture, finance or reporting, economic sustainability, and sustainable urban development were examined relatively often; and c) big data, Internet of Things, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and blockchain belong to the most important ICT applied for SD.

The main benefit of the study is providing a holistic view of the research on emerging ICT for sustainability.
