ABSTRACT

Using prefecture-level city panel data from 2005 to 2013, this paper constructs the index of population concentration and city size from satellite light data and city characteristic data, respectively, the impact of scale effect and crowding effect produced by urban agglomeration development on environmental pollution and solutions are quantitatively explored. The results show: 1) The expansion of city size has significantly reduced environmental pollution and the increase in population concentration has aggravated environmental pollution. However, the scale effect brought by urban agglomeration development is much higher than the crowding. 2) The DID methods is further used to explore the effectiveness of population control and environmental supervision in the treatment of environment pollution, it founds that the environmental information disclosure policy from the perspective of environmental pollution supervision has significantly reduced environmental pollution, while the control of the population has no significant impact on it.
