ABSTRACT

The prevalence of COVID-19 diseases seriously exerts various impacts on our life. However, wearing masks help control the further spread of this contagious disease. The extensive use of medical masks or cloth masks has been polluting the environment greatly, not only because of improper waste treatments, but also because of plastic manufacturing. This paper will explain the components of two types of masks—disposable medical masks and cloth masks, and propose reasonable and environmentally friendly treatment processes and suggestions about biodegradable material in the production of masks. The major feature of this article is investigating the properties of disposable medical masks and fabric masks, as well as performing component analysis. Furthermore, the present reaction to the harm caused by disposable medical masks and cloth masks is outlined, and several countermeasures from the perspectives of technology, government, businesses, and the general public are offered. In the future, we may have advanced technology for producing environmentally friendly masks that are provided for everyone, so there are fewer impacts on the environment, health, and economy. The value of this proposal is giving practical solutions and practical suggestions toward the challenges that are urgently prepared to be solved in no longer several decades. In addition to the energy source, less fossil fuel could be used in the industries.
