ABSTRACT

The findings of numerical analyses focused on the axial crushing performance of tubes structures are presented in this paper. In this study, the thin-walled structure is assumed to be in the form of three different types of cross-sectional hollow tubes. The circular, square, and triangular cross-sectional hollow tubes with Mild steel and Al5083 material are utilized to study the effect of the geometric cross-section and characterize the material impact on the progressive axial folding responses. The hollow tubes were investigated using FE analysis performed on the ABAQUS/Explicit software. An adequate FE prediction against experiments has also been provided. This cross-sectional tube can be used as a reinforcement in the ship’s hull structure which can be used as a safety element to withstand impact forces in the case of ship-ship collisions. In the end, the configuration of the most suitable cross-sectional tube to withstand compressive loads was found in this study.
