ABSTRACT

The European Commission’s legislative proposal entitled “Fit for 55” sets out guidelines for the maritime sector in the Member States. In Finland, foreign trade is exceptionally dependent on smooth maritime transport: A requirement to stay on schedule with low-emissions approach, including competitive transport pricing and periodically challenging ice conditions makes for a challenging combination. These challenges are being studied in project called the “MEPTEK”. During this project, a maritime emissions workshop was arranged on 6 October 2021. The attendees were mainly participants from different authorities, research institutions, and representatives of the commercial maritime sector. The workshop highlighted the environmental impact of scrubbers, emission regulations and monitoring methods, EU maritime proposals on emission trading and fuels, winter shipping system, and emission managements proposals from the perspective of authorities, researchers, and shipowners. The objective of this paper is to summarize the highlights of the workshop, from a scientific, legal, and practical perspective.
