ABSTRACT

A non-exhaustive review of existing or proposed combinations of marine exploitation activities in multi-use configurations, either in co-location, integration, or island structure setups is presented. The reviewed designs involve the synergic combination of the marine uses for marine renewable energies (wind, wave, solar, tidal, OTEC, hydrogen and gas), aquaculture, tourism and leisure, transport and ports, or desalinization. Potential multi-use opportunities in European regions have been presented and their financial, technical, regulatory, and environmental benefits or challenges analyzed. Further efforts requiring special attention to move towards the commercialization of multi-use have been highlighted.
