ABSTRACT

The pilot application “Monitoring Fishing Activity”, under the scope of the showcase Water Resources Management of the H2020 e-shape project, aims to develop a web-based tool for the exploration and visualization of spatio-temporal information on fishing fleets activities. The dynamics and landings of two Portuguese fisheries targeting migratory pelagic species were analysed: the tuna pole and line fishery and the swordfish drifting longline fishery taking place within the Portuguese Exclusive Economic Zone and surrounding high seas areas, in the Northeast Atlantic. This paper presents the first results on the activity of these two fishing fleets, from three main data sources: vessels sales, e-logbook records and spatial data from AIS, for the 2012-2018 period. The results are provided as maps on fishing intensity, landings and vessels fishing trajectories in multiple time scales that will be accessible to stakeholders on an interactive web platform.
