ABSTRACT

An expansion joint with a swivel-joist control system with multiple load cells and displacement sensors is presented together with spherical bearings equipped with sensors for vertical load, horizontal displacement, and rotation. The gathered sensor data is used to assess the properties of crossing vehicles (axle configuration and loads, total load and velocity, vehicle type) and simultaneously evaluate the health condition of the bridge and the smart components themselves. A reference implementation of this setup has been realized as part of the publicly funded project cluster “Smart Bridge in the Digital Testbed Motorway”.
