ABSTRACT

A novel drive-by bridge inspection method is proposed to detect bridge damages by focusing on the dynamic force of a running vehicle. The proposed method considers differences of identified dynamic vehicle forces of between health and damage states of bridges as a damage sensitive feature of the drive-by bridge inspection. The bigger the difference is, the higher the possibility of damage on the bridge is. In both the simulation and the experiment studies, it was observed that the severer the bridge damage was, the larger the difference of dynamic vehicle force was, implying a possibility to detect bridge damages successfully by the proposed method.
