ABSTRACT

Pile installation involves inspection, monitoring, and decision-making at all aspects. Among these aspects, this paper focuses on the propagation of the stress wave and provides information that may be useful in monitoring and decision-making. An example pile under impact loading was analyzed for two different spiral materials: steel and GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer). Explicit finite element analysis was used to obtain the time domain response. Similarities and differences of the response were discussed. For the pile design used in this paper, the stress in the concrete did not have a significant difference between the two spirals. On the other hand, the stress in the spirals had significant difference but well within the ultimate stress. The information from the analysis may be useful in preparing for the pile installation monitoring.
