ABSTRACT

SPS (Sandwich Plate system) is an innovative alternative for new construction or rehabilitation of existing bridge structures. SPS consists of two external steel plates and an elastomer core, which can be fabricated as independent panels or applied on top of existing steel (orthotropic) decks as overlay reinforcement. SPS deck panels are ideal for deck replacement as the system is significantly lighter than other traditional systems whilst reaching the same structural capacity. Moreover, panels are prefabricated, which means they can be tailored to fit all project specifications and allow easy connection to the bridge girders. SPS can also be used as an overlay reinforcement on existing decks to reduce stress ranges, increase structural capacity, and improves fatigue performance. A detailed case study of the Mettlach bridge deck replacement and the Pont Rouge deck overlay reinforcement will be discussed to exemplify the application and advantages of SPS.
