ABSTRACT

Recently, deterioration of structures has become a serious problem, especially corrosion of girder ends is one of serious problem in the maintenance of steel bridges. Many studies on repair and retrofit of corroded girder ends have been conducted and patch plates to cover corrosion damage is one of the most general way to repair corroded girder ends. However, the shape and size of patch plates are required to be arranged to fit different corrosion damages of each girder. Therefore, lack of versatility is a problem of this method. In this study, analytical studies on corroded girder ends repaired by different types of patch plates were conducted to investigate minimum and rational patch plates which can recover the original load capacity of the girder. Analytical results indicated that patch plates at the bearing stiffener were adequate to recover the original load capacity.
