ABSTRACT

Several aspects need to be considered when planning a bridge demolition such as economic, environmental, and social factors. Consequently, it can be affirmed that a structure demolition is as important as its construction process. Over the Kalix river, in northern Sweden, a prestressed concrete bridge will be replaced, and its demolition was expected to take place at the beginning of 2022. This bridge is located within a European area Nature 2000, which implies that the river and surroundings must be protected for any damage and/or pollution. Therefore, for its demolition, it was necessary to consider that no waste could fall into the Kalix river during the execution. This paper presents a summary of the different demolition strategies that were assessed for the Kalix bridge case. In addition, a preliminary demolition plan was proposed and herein described.
