ABSTRACT

Risk assessment has been recognized as a significant probabilistic performance indicator to integrate the probability of failure of deteriorating structures and its consequences. This paper proposes an approach for risk-based optimum inspection planning for deteriorating structural components and systems. The performance of inspection, risks of the structural components and systems, system modelling and cost of inspection and maintenance are considered in the proposed approach. The performance of inspection is quantified by the probability of damage detection. The risks of structural components and systems at a target lifetime are formulated by considering the relation among damage detection, service life extension due to maintenance, and probability of failure and its consequences. The risk-based optimum inspection planning is based on minimizing both the expected risk and the expected cost of inspection and maintenance. The approach presented can be applied to deteriorating bridges and other infrastructure systems.
