ABSTRACT

The refurbishment of Ponte S. Michele (1887-1889), was the result of a careful assessment of the bridge structural capabilities and of the accurate design of strengthening works. During the refurbishment, a continuous feedback allowed to verify the compatibility of the designed project with the bridge actual conditions. Given the importance of the structure and the safety requirements, a dynamic monitoring system has been arranged in cooperation with RFI, to analyze its behavior during service. Sensors have been installed in order to monitor the structure overall response (temperature and acceleration measurements, relative displacements at the bearings, deformation of arch and deck). A system of laser barriers allows to identify the transits and to correlate the action of loads to the effects measured by the sensors. This article presents the criteria used for the system arrangement and the methods of acquisition, processing and data storage and filtering, aimed to achieve security assessments.
