ABSTRACT

Corrosion is a natural electrochemical process between a material, especially a metal, and its surrounding environment that can cause a disintegration of the exposed substance and alter its properties. The presented chapter contains corrosion basics and corrosion's economic impact on society and the environment. The chapter deals with the various classifications of corrosion depending upon different criteria, such as the mechanism of corrosion and the nature of the corrodent's appearance on the corroded metal. Economic impact on any nation may occur due to the oil and gas industries’ corrosion problems. The evolved gases cause major deterioration of inner pipelines and affect storage at a larger level.
