ABSTRACT

Melioidosis is a complex tropical disease caused by a bacteria named Burkholderia pseudomallei, which is transmitted by contaminated soil, water, and air. Primordial prevention by stopping the emergence of risk factors and a multi-modal approach for the prevention of melioidosis is possibly the best way to control transmission and the disease. Primary public health preventive measures like good hygiene, the use of barrier methods like water-resistant ‘knee-high’ boots and hand gloves, safe drinking water, and restriction of outdoor movement during dusty storms and cyclones are the keys to preventing melioidosis. The impact of the disease can be further decreased by establishing awareness of its endemicity by officially recognizing melioidosis as a neglected tropical disease.
