ABSTRACT

Melioidosis is a fatal disease in humans caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. Based on mathematical modelling, an estimated 3 billion people live in the area likely to harbour B. pseudomallei. However, globally, only about 35,000 human melioidosis cases have been reported since 1911. This data is grossly under-recognized and under-reported due to various reasons. Therefore, the actual global burden of melioidosis is unknown.
