ABSTRACT

Today's society advocates the concept of water control that reveres nature and seeks harmony between man and nature. In 2021, we examined ancient eco-hydraulic projects in China through field research and literature searches, and discovered the Guangli Canal in Henan, a heritage irrigation project with a history of over 2,200 years but relatively poorly studied academically. Located in northwest Henan, the Guangli Canal is one of the longest-established irrigation projects in the lower reaches of the Yellow River in China, and one of the few tunnel-gate water diversion hubs in ancient China. From the perspective of harmony between man and nature, this paper, considering its natural environment and historical evolution, technically analyses the construction techniques of the Guangli Canal that are still in full use for irrigation and summarizes its technical essence and ideological core in the historical period, aiming to provide scientific ideas and ideals for the development of contemporary water conservancy projects.
