ABSTRACT

Located in Longyou County, Zhejiang Province, Jiangxiyan Irrigation System is an important ancient mountain stream diversion irrigation project on the Lingshangang River. Built between 1330 and 1333, the project has been in use for over 680 years. In 2018, Jiangxiyan Irrigation System was included in the World List of ICID Heritage Irrigation Structures. Yet academic research on the project is still very scarce. This paper attempts to analyze Jiangxiyan Irrigation System in terms of historical development, engineering system, management system and value evaluation through field research, literature survey and qualitative analysis; and concludes that the Jiangxiyan Irrigation System is a model of ancient ecological water conservancy projects, and its architectural form, engineering techniques and management system were innovative in the region at that time, which can provide an ideological reference for the construction of contemporary water conservancy projects, and a research basis for better conservation and utilization in the future.
