ABSTRACT

Microfibre pollution (MFP) is a complex issue in which existing mitigation solutions link to multiple industries and our everyday life, from wastewater treatment to textile design and from manufacturing to preventing its release during the wear phase of the garment (e.g. laundering). MFP is not a single stakeholder’s responsibility; instead, it requires a holistic understanding and should be tackled as a multi-stakeholder approach, which needs to be further reflected in policy plans and objectives. This chapter reviews some prominent formal government-led and voluntary research and/or industry-led policy initiatives to discuss their benefits and challenges, and further shed light on research areas and potential initiatives that require more discussion, multi-stakeholder collaboration, and policy attention.
