ABSTRACT

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are the photosynthetic microorganism having tremendous application potential in the field of human wellbeing with lots of biological activities in the form of nutritive complement. Different cyanobacteria (Nostoc, Anabaena, Microcystis, Lyngbya, Oscillatoria, Synechocystis, Calotherix, etc.), produce a large number of secondary metabolites (pigments, vitamins, food supplements) containing biological functions. The secondary byproducts obtained from cyano-bacteria are great factor of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory response. Cyanobacteria also produce some biochemical diverse compounds belonging to alkaloids, cyclic peptides, lipopolysaccharides (LPSs), fatty acids (FAs), etc. Besides these, this photosynthetic microorganism has novel potency of biosynthesis of UV absorbing/protective compound. Approximately 60% of marine cyanobacteria are reported as biomodulator. They play a role as anticancer, antimicrobial, antiviral, antioxidant. 88However, these compounds are also at the clinical trial stage, and few are available in the market. Therefore, we can conclude that microalgae have potential application in the area of biomedical science, cosmetic industries, nutraceuticals, animal feed, etc.
