ABSTRACT

The unique properties of engineered nanomaterials can provide innovative solutions to environmental challenges, ranging from monitoring to remediation. The versatile functionality and enhanced reactivity of materials at nanoscale provide them with enormous potential, way more than their bulk counterparts. Nanotechnology provides improved and sustainable methods for environmental sensing and detection, water treatment, pollution control, air purification, nanostructured membranes, disposal management and alternative cost-effective energy sources.

This chapter discusses how nanotechnology is revolutionizing every environmental domain. For example, the role of nanodevices in environmental sensing systems has been elaborated in this chapter. We also address as to how nanomembranes and various metallic nanoparticles are facilitating mechanical filtration for wastewater treatment and soil remediation. This chapter also focuses on the advantages of using nanostructures and nanowires for creating efficient and cheaper energy sources, while also discussing the role of green synthesis of nanoparticles for environmental benefit. Going further, the chapter discusses the environmental risks posed by nanotechnology, for a more secure and innocuous use of nanomaterials. To conclude, rational manufacturing of desired nanomaterials, and their safe applications must be met for the delicate balance between usefulness and potential hazards.
