ABSTRACT

Surface modification or functionalization of magnetic nanomaterials is highly desired for any specific application because of the multifunctional characteristics of the final product. Any specific characteristics of the materials such as optical and electronic could be combined with magnetic characteristics by developing the surface-modified or functionalized magnetic nanomaterials. The synergetic properties will be utilized for various applications such as photocatalytic, energy storage/conversion, water purification, detoxification, and biomedical and environmental applications. However, proper precautions are to be taken and some expertise will be required to achieve the surface modification/functionalization instead of just a composite magnetic material without proper interaction. This chapter gives a brief introduction to the synthesis of magnetic nanomaterials, their surface modification/functionalization, and a few applications.
