ABSTRACT

Locusts are migratory pests that often take aerial routes, in the form of massive and massive swarms, and are used as food in many forms. If we recall history, they have been used as food since centuries, well documented in the literature of various types. Various cultures and countries consume locusts, especially in Africa, Middle East, and Asian countries. Locusts are used as feed and food for animals and poultry birds. They are vital sources of proteins. The idea of consuming them is a good idea as food supplements as animal feed and for human population is of no exception. They move from one country to another country in huge numbers and these massive swarms could be easily trapped and exploited as food 192for the future to ensure food security crisis in the poorest of the poor countries. Though such cultures allow them to eat locusts. These locusts were important diets for North Americans. A single adult of locust consumes two grams of fresh vegetation per day. The solitary and gregarious swarms of locusts are threat to food security and livelihoods. Besides, to bring down these swarms under control, millions of dollars are being allocated by the world body (FAO) to save hunger of the world’s poorest countries and at least 20 million people are at risk and finally to prevent the 25 million ha of cultivated areas are under threat. Locust consumption as food prevents malnutrition and protein scarcity in human population and also food and feed to other domesticated animals and poultry birds, just to prevent other food grains to feed them. The consumption of locusts for human population as food and other animals will ensure food security and thus can be exploited for the management of locusts in different parts of the globe to some extent. The exploitation of locusts as food will save different economic budgets allocated for the control of locust management, to address protein deficiencies, malnutrition in poorest of the poor countries (very low-income countries), potential crop damage, and to ensure a clean environment in the globe. The food saved in this direction is a great service to humanity as the sense of understanding is to knocking out the world’s budget allocated for the management of locusts will ensure a food for thought for replicating our future policies and strategies at the global level.
