ABSTRACT

Information is the lifeblood of any modern-day organization and as a result, information needs to be treated as a critical corporate asset and managed according to a well-defined information governance strategy. Unmanaged file content lives throughout organizations on laptops, desktops, e-mail systems and – archives, on file shares, and in content repositories like Microsoft SharePoint and EMC Documentum. Transaction data, particularly for recent transactions, those reside on live production applications. Organizations can have a wide range of information retention and disposition requirements. Transaction data and content may be well organized, residing in an enterprise repository with readily available metadata for controlling retention. In response to the growing volume and complexity of content that needs policy-driven retention management, many vendors have added an appearance of retention management to each of their products, forcing businesses to implement an overall solution by specifying content retention policies within each individual product.
