ABSTRACT

This chapter describes an automated device for the detection and classification of Plasmodium species on thick blood films. An overview of Plasmodium parasites that cause malaria, and current diagnosis methods and their limitations are discussed. The chapter concludes with the detailed introduction of an automated device, consisting of an image acquisition unit and its image analysis software module, which could be mounted on a conventional light microscope and operated by a health practitioner/technician with minimal training in the detection and diagnosis of malaria parasites.
