ABSTRACT
Vegetable oils are an environmentally friendly renewable resource that contains a wide range of fatty acid compositions because this is suitable for various industrial purposes. The products derived from vegetable oil are non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and biodegradable. So, this is an attractive natural source for developing new renewable energy. The depletion of fossil fuels attract researcher to innovate new renewable and environmentally friendly energy source. The biodiesel derived from vegetable oil is a promising energy source that can replace fossil fuels. This chapter comprises an overview of vegetable oil feedstock, the effect of direct use of vegetable oil in diesel engines, biodiesel derived from vegetable oil, and the current status of biodiesel in India.
