ABSTRACT

Myxomycetes, commonly referred to as slime molds, do not have a particularly attractive name, but many species produce fruiting bodies that are miniature objects of considerable beauty. Because of their small size and the conditions in which they occur, these organisms tend to be overlooked in nature. The small size of the fruiting body of most species of myxomycetes makes it a difficult structure to photograph. However, with the improvement of photography, most published works on the myxomycetes that have appeared since the publication of The Myxomycetes of Japan have used-photographs instead of paintings or drawings to illustrate the species being considered. The congress also attracts artists, who are provided with an opportunity to display their work. There is certainly no better place to view the range of artwork currently being generated on the myxomycetes.
