ABSTRACT

Mobile telephony infrastructure development has improved greatly in Africa as a result of the telecom market liberalization. The specific telecom market liberalization cases chosen are Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya. It is worth mentioning that although liberation played a major role in the development of the mobile telephony market, other factors such regulation of right of way and has enabled the modest development of competitive fibre optics backhaul in Ghana. The market reforms introduced to Africa by the international development partners in the late 1980s and 1990s was the catalyst to entrance of digital mobile telephony. Some market reform initiative in Africa included privatization and market liberalization. In order to get a clear picture of the impact of liberalization, it is important to have a look at the pre-liberalization mobile penetration in Africa and also the post-liberalization mobile penetration in Africa.
