ABSTRACT

The security challenges on mobile devices in Africa are crucial to the development of communication in African society. This chapter explores the vulnerabilities and offers some solutions. Threats to mobile devices in terms of vulnerabilities and attacks, if not checked and controlled, could have serious setback to the growth and development of communication in Africa. Africans are active on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. As the computing world moves to mobile, the delivery and usage of social media platforms, such as Facebook, has shifted as well. Mobile applications and mobile web browsers are the most commonly used applications to visit social media sites on mobile devices. Nowadays most of the social media sites have specific applications for mobile social media. Malware is blended threats each designed to cause specific havoc on the user and the device. There is a security concern for iOS with the explosion of mobile applications in the African market.
