ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how a lasting impact at scale and sustainability can be made in m-Health for HIV/AIDS in Africa. The belief that HIV/AIDS is caused by spirits and the supernatural demonstrate a misinformation about AIDS and may endorse social sanctions stigmatizing patients, and these should be borne in mind in any m-Health solutions in communities. Scaling up and sustaining health promotion interventions are very important in projects and programs. Mobile phones enable health practitioners and experts to reach and treat patients over a far wider geographical range than was possible in the past. The environmental and social consequences for health-related action need to be directly addressed by working with individuals as well as small groups and the community in order to make sustainability easy to achieve. More extensive research is needed on the content, frequency and type of telephone communication and how it can increase the benefits derived from m-Health applications.
