ABSTRACT

The infusion of technology into agricultural extension in the areas of marketing and climate information dissemination is critical to improve the livelihoods of the millions of smallholder farmers across Africa. The ability to create awareness and the timely delivery of climatic information would have a major impact on living standards among Ghanaian smallholder farmers. Although the Esoko Ghana Commodity Index platform facilitates effective delivery information for farmers, the commercial nature of the platform is shifting the attention from important information such as climatic information to market driven product prices. Agricultural Extension Services in Ghana dates back to the nineteenth century with the aims of providing an avenue for research findings and new farming methods to be communicated to farmers. The unprecedented growth of mobile technology in Ghana with phenomenal mobile subscription exceeding 100% of the total population provides a platform for information dissemination to smallholder farmers.
