ABSTRACT

Unstructured knowledge transfer (KT) routinely occurs within and across organisational boundaries, whether the process is actively managed or not. However, most studies on KT have focused on knowledge transfer within the performing organisation or the project team. This chapter conceptualises knowledge transfer from an organisation (construction firm) to an external party (project host community). Construction projects are executed in communities that can and should benefit from superior knowledge within the project implementing organisations. A discursive approach is adopted to set the perceived challenges of such a transfer in the context of the extensive literature on knowledge transfer and conceptualises the issues for future research. In the chapter, safety knowledge is considered one example of knowledge that can be transferred from internal to external actors. It is argued in the chapter that such knowledge transfer is not naïve as contended by some but very much plausible.
