ABSTRACT

Construction workers often refuse to use given safety apparel or do not use them appropriately, resulting in accidents and sometimes fatalities. The chapter investigates discomforts associated with using safety helmets on Ghanaian construction sites. Construction workers were interviewed to identify critical discomforts associated with safety helmet use on-site that resulted in the ineffective use of this PPE. The chapter identified several discomforts associated with safety helmet use on site, with “hotness within the helmet” and “poor fit” prevalent amongst the discomforts cited. The chapter’s findings indicate the need for relevant considerations that ensure adequate fit and comfortability to be made in importing or procuring safety helmets for users in developing countries to improve conformance to safety helmet protocols on construction sites.
