ABSTRACT

The advancements in technology have created the possibility of emulating flexible structures for a variety of purposes. One such field is soft robotics, which can be applied in various industries requiring a wide range of mechanical movements. However, the choice of materials can pose challenges in the fabrication of soft robotics. Hydrogels, with a chemically sensitive structure, have emerged as an ideal source of user-friendly and flexible materials for soft robotics. Hydrogels offer a range of physical, chemical, and conductive properties advantageous for soft robotic applications. In this chapter, a brief overview of the basics of hydrogels and their various types is provided. The chapter then highlights the components of soft robots made from hydrogels, including actuators, sensors, and control units. Before the chapter concludes, it discusses the design and engineering of hydrogels for soft robotic applications.
