ABSTRACT

Malaysia’s mushroom market which saw cultivation initiated in the 1960s has been relatively small but has been growing steadily with the increasing demand from the local and neighbouring markets due to growing awareness of the nutritive benefits of mushrooms. The commercial scenario for the mushroom industry in Malaysia is largely divided into two segments: companies specializing in farming/cultivating edible mushrooms and medicinal mushrooms. The growth of the Malaysian mushroom industry is challenged by its capacity for production and innovation of new cultivation technology. Growers, stakeholders and the Malaysian Government can focus on expansion of markets; increasing consumer awareness; evolving new products and technology; and build up network with other agro-food industries for the industry to flourish in the near future.
