ABSTRACT

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS may have infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods or excess male hormone (androgen) levels. The ovaries may develop numerous small collections of fluid (follicles) and fail to regularly release eggs. The exact cause of PCOS is not known but may involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Symptoms include menstrual irregularity, excess hair growth, acne, and obesity. Treatments include birth control pills to regularize periods, a medication called metformin to prevent diabetes, statins to control high cholesterol, hormones to increase fertility, and procedures to remove excess hair. To date, there is no direct treatment except through obesity-, pain-, and diet-management therapy. In the hustle-bustle of life today, having an improper diet (consuming fast food, and lethargic and unhealthy lifestyles, thereby inviting obesity along with other complications) is very common. Obesity further leads to a number of intricacies in our physiology. Recently, the Hyponidd tablet is a unique ayurvedic formulation for maintaining reproductive health in women. Herbs such as Vijaysaar and Haridra help to balance hormones and thereby help manage PCOS symptoms. However, it has to be looked in detail through an ayurvedic eye. In this chapter, various ayurvedic formulations as “Green Healers” have been discussed.
