ABSTRACT

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a widespread gynecological, endocrine, and metabolic abnormality among women of reproductive age, characterized by hyperandrogenism, obesity, insulin resistance, menstrual irregularities, chronic anovulation, infertility, and hirsutism. Synthetic drugs such as metformin, tamoxifen, and clomiphene citrate are commonly used for the treatment of this disorder. However, due to their side effects, many medical practitioners advise women with PCOS for alternative phyto/ayurvedic medicine in conjunction with traditional medicine to recover from such pathogenesis. In this connection, our aim is to investigate the therapeutic effects of some herbal resources which are very helpful in PCOS management. These are Aloe vera (L.) Burm. f. (Aloe Vera), Cinnamomum verum J. Presl (Cinnamon), Foeniculum vulgare Mill. (Fennel), Glycyrrhiza glabra L. (Liquorice), Punica granatum L. (Pomegranate), Glycine max (L.) Merr. (Soybean), and Mentha spicata L. (Spearmint). The findings from the available literature indicate that these medicinal plants/herbs play a key role in treating PCOS.
