ABSTRACT

Mentha villosa Huds., popularly known as mint, is a hybrid of M. spicata and M. suaveolens used in folk medicine to treat pain, inflamma- tion, and infections. In the essential oil and the aqueous extract of this plant was found a wide range of potential bioactives such as the monoterpenes eucalyptol and limonene, phenolic compounds, and flavonoid glycosides. These molecules may be responsible for the plant's pharmacological activity. In the literature, it was reported to have antinociceptive, antimicrobial, antihelmintic, antioxidant and hypotensive effects; however, further studies are yet to be carried out to unveil the full potential of the mint.
